It’s Easy to Keep Your Teeth and Gums in Good Shape as You Get Older

February 3, 2025

Good oral health is important at any age, but after 50, you may need to adjust your routine as changes in your body affect your oral health. Whether you have your natural teeth, some dentures or full dentures, maintaining a healthy mouth is crucial.

At the office of Apple Dentistry, patients step into a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. We ensure that your visit will be pleasant from the moment you walk in. We enjoy getting to know our patients and establishing positive relationships with them.

Fluoride helps protect against decay, which is more common as you age. Use fluoride toothpaste daily and drink fluoridated tap water to reduce the risk of cavities. If your municipality’s tap water doesn’t include fluoride, your dentist may also recommend in-office fluoride treatments for added protection.

Certain factors, such as medications or chronic conditions, can increase your risk for dry mouth, which can lead to cavities and affect the fit of dentures. Dry mouth can cause discomfort, but there are ways to manage it. Try a moisturizing mouthwash, chew sugar-free gum, or use artificial saliva, which mimics real saliva. Consult your doctor or dentist if medication is the cause; he or she can adjust your dosage or suggest alternatives.

Over 178 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth, and older adults are more likely to experience tooth loss. If you wear dentures, clean them daily using a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Brush your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush to remove food and bacteria. If you have partial dentures, floss between the implants before reinserting them. Your dentist can provide specific care instructions to extend the life of your dentures.

Gum disease is also a concern, affecting nearly 64 percent of adults over 65. While common, gum disease is preventable. Maintain good dental hygiene and visit your dentist regularly to prevent or address it early to enjoy a healthy smile at any age.

Choose Apple Dentistry as your dentist to experience the difference in personalized, high-quality care that prioritizes your well-being. Your oral health is our priority, and we look forward to being your trusted partner. Please call us for an appointment today.
